Indian Wedding: Bride

 

So far we have seen the different types of wedding across Indian culture and the way they are conducted on the blog section “Indian Wedding”, we have also seen different types of Mehendi applied, on the blog section “Indian Wedding : Mehendi”. Today we are going to have a look at the brides, their bridal wear, designer lehengas from top designers. 

The Indian bride always looks gorgeous in her traditional outfits paired with stunning jewellary, right make-up and hair style. Wedding is an occasion where everybody takes an effort to look their best but the bride has to stand out of the crowd and look unique in her ensembles. Let’s have a look at the different brides and their wedding ensembles. 

Maharashtrian Bride

Traditional Marathi bride wears a Paithani nine yard saree on her wedding day. The Green color stands for fertility and is considered auspicious for the bride. Maharashtrian bridal jewellary are simple and so the make-up. Brides from Maharashtra wear something called as mundavalya – stings of pearls tied horizontally across the forehead in a cascade from the temples down to the shoulders, framing the face. The traditional Maharashtrian look is brought about with a base eye shadow in neutral shades that can match all the 5 sari change that occur during the ceremonies.

Bengali Bride

Bengali bride usually wears a bright crimson Banarasi saree, she also wears a chunni along with the Mukut. The bride is considered to be an incarnation of the goddess of wealth – goddess Lakshmi. Begali brides wear heavy jewellary. The bride usually wears three types of bangles namely – Shankha - a conch shell bangle, Pala – a lac bangle and Loha- an iron bangle. These distinguish a Bengali bride from brides of other communities and also signify the marital status of Bengali women.  They have a very heavy and dramatic make-up with a unique white and red dot artistically painted on her forehead just above the eyebrow which extends towards her cheek and chin and bright red bindi on her forehead completes the look of the Bengali bride.

Gujarati bride 

The Gujarati bride wears a traditional saree draped in Gujarati style. There are two basic types of wedding sarees in Gujarat the Panetar, which is a white sari with red bandhini border and the Gharchola, the traditional bandhini sari red in colour... Gujarati bride is decked with expensive and royal jewellary made of diamond gold and kundan. Heavy Necklace and earrings with maang tikka, bangles (glass and gold mix), Baaju band (armlet) and a waist band in silver or gold.  A big designer bindi on the forehead is a must in Gujarati bride. They like to deck-up, The eyes are done up strikingly with a dark coloured eyeliner, false lashes, kohl and lots of shimmer on the eyelids. The lips are enhanced with a deep shade of colour while the hair is swept up into an up do with matching hair accessories.

Rajasthani Bride

Rajasthani bride wears a lehenga which is a traditional outfit of Rajasthan. It’s a three piece set which consist of a blouse (known as choli), a long skirt (Ghagra) along with dupatta to cover the head which is in netted or made of chiffon with heavy embroidery done on the border of the duppata. Gotta Patti work is also a traditional rajasthani work done on bridal wear but I believe along with the time it’s been replacing with more modern work. They wear Rakhri – a circular piece of jewelry for the forehead, Balis -hanging earings, the Chooda -a set of ivory and gold bangles, Timaniyaan -a choker studded with uncut diamonds which is a necklace made of jems embedded in gold leaf, Bajubandh – stone-studded armlets, Bichuye – gold anklets and a Nath – a nose ring. The make-up is moderate to enhance the wheatish skin tone of the region using warm and earthy tones. Eyes are highlighted and hair is styled back as per the length and volume to enhance the overall look.

Catholic Bride 

An ethereal angelic look in white gown and a tiara on the head makes them look gorgeous as if they have just stepped from heaven itself. Their gown comes in various style, cut and designs. Net, Satin and lace work are the most commonly used in designing the gowns. Their make-up is moderate and not too loud, everything is kept suttle to compliment the white gown. A good hair style completes their ethereal look. The catholic brides look simple, graceful and classy. Towards the end of the wedding celebrations, when the bride is about to depart, she throws her bridal bouquet to a group of unmarried girls following her, and whichever girl catches it is expected to get married next.

Punjabi Bride 

The traditional Punjabi bride wears Shalwar and Kameez along with heavily embroidered or worked up dupatta. The bride wears bangles made of ivory known as Chooda. These are White and dark Red in colour and hold great significance to the bride. Earlier the brides used to wear this Chooda for the whole year but now days it’s been worn only for a month after the wedding. 

Friends and sisters-in-law tie Kalire, a hanging ornament made of gold or silver on these bangles. Kalire’s are encrusted with dried coconut and dried beetle nuts. It is said that after the wedding the bride rubs her hands against each other to drop the Kalire on the heads of unmarried girls, and who so ever gets the Kalire first is expected to get married within a short period.
